As artificial intelligence expands at breakneck speed, the demand for electricity has become one of the tech industry's most pressing headaches. Data centers need megawatts that current renewable infrastructure can't always deliver on time. Elon Musk, never one to wait around, has decided to tackle the problem head-on with a plan that few companies have dared to try: building his own gas turbines.

According to a report from The Information, SpaceX is now manufacturing custom gas turbine components at a facility in Bastrop, Texas. The goal is to sidestep a supply chain that's been bottlenecked by a handful of industrial giants like GE Vernova, Siemens Energy, and Mitsubishi Power. By producing these parts in-house, Musk hopes to accelerate the construction of power plants by up to 18 months, aiming to have enough electricity to support his AI ventures by the end of 2027.

Why go it alone?

The global market for heavy-duty turbines is notoriously tight. Orders are backed up for years, and the few companies that make the specialized blades and castings have little incentive to speed up. For Musk, whose timelines are famously aggressive, waiting isn't an option. "We can't rely on external suppliers who are already stretched thin," a source close to the project told The Information. "This is about controlling our own destiny."

But manufacturing turbine blades is no small feat. These components must withstand extreme temperatures and pressures, requiring precision casting and rigorous quality control. Any defect means the part is scrapped, and the process demands millimeter-perfect accuracy. Industry analysts warn that SpaceX is entering a highly complex field, but the company's engineering teams are reportedly optimizing their processes to meet the challenge.

The environmental trade-off

Musk's pivot to natural gas has raised eyebrows, especially given his history with Tesla and solar energy. He's acknowledged that solar alone won't cut it for the massive power needs of AI data centers. "We need a bridge," he said in a recent interview. "Natural gas is the most practical option right now."

That stance has drawn criticism from environmental groups. A Bloomberg analysis estimates that the additional power plants required for AI could increase U.S. carbon dioxide emissions by 20%—and that's before counting new projects like Musk's. For a region like Latin America, where the effects of climate change are already being felt, this is a sobering reminder of the trade-offs in the race for AI dominance.

Still, Musk isn't alone in this approach. Other tech giants have also struck deals with energy operators to secure power, often turning to fossil fuels as a stopgap. The difference is that Musk is vertically integrating, much like he did with rocket parts at SpaceX and batteries at Tesla.

What it means for the industry

If SpaceX succeeds, it could disrupt the turbine market, forcing established players to rethink their pricing and delivery schedules. It might also inspire other companies to bring more manufacturing in-house, reshaping the energy supply chain. Investors are watching closely, and the stakes are high: some estimates suggest that powering the next wave of data centers will require investments of up to $10 billion by 2027.

For now, the Bastrop plant is a closely guarded operation, with engineers running stress tests and refining casting techniques. The clock is ticking, and the pressure is on. But if anyone can pull off a moonshot, it's the guy who's already building rockets.

This isn't just a story about energy and tech—it's also about how the AI boom is reshaping economies and environments across the Americas.
