Robert Edward "Ted" Turner III, the brash media mogul who built CNN into a global news powerhouse, died this Wednesday at the age of 87. The cause was complications from Lewy body dementia, a progressive brain disorder that affects thinking, memory, and movement. Turner had been open about his diagnosis in recent years, even as he stepped back from the public eye.

Turner's death marks the end of an era in journalism. He founded the Cable News Network in 1980, defying skeptics who doubted a 24-hour news channel could succeed. CNN became the first network to broadcast live around the clock, changing how the world consumed news. From the fall of the Berlin Wall to the Gulf War, CNN's cameras were there, often before anyone else.

A Life of Bold Moves

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1938, Turner inherited a billboard company from his father and transformed it into a media empire. He bought a struggling Atlanta TV station and turned it into WTBS, the first superstation to reach cable viewers nationwide. But CNN was his crowning achievement. "We're going to be on the air until the end of the world," Turner once joked, "and we'll cover that live."

Beyond news, Turner owned the Atlanta Braves baseball team and was an avid sailor, winning the America's Cup in 1977. He also became a major philanthropist, donating billions to environmental causes and the United Nations. In 1997, he pledged $1 billion to the UN, a record at the time. His generosity extended to Latino communities through his support of educational programs in the Americas.

Turner's influence reached Latin America directly. CNN en Español, launched in 1997, brought his vision of 24-hour news to Spanish-speaking audiences across the hemisphere. The network became a trusted source for millions, from Buenos Aires to Los Angeles. Turner understood that news had no borders, and his commitment to covering the region helped shape how Latinos see the world.

His later years were marked by health struggles. Lewy body dementia, which also affected actor Robin Williams, gradually robbed Turner of his sharp mind. He retreated to his Montana ranch, where he died peacefully with family by his side. His daughter, Laura Turner Seydel, said in a statement: "He was a force of nature, and his legacy will live on in the stories he helped tell."

Turner's death comes as the media landscape he helped create faces new challenges. Streaming services and social media have fragmented audiences, but CNN's model of live, global coverage remains influential. For Latino viewers, Turner's networks provided a window into events that mattered, from elections in México to natural disasters in the Caribbean.

In a world of constant news, it's easy to forget how radical Turner's idea was. He bet that people would tune in for information, not just entertainment. He was right. Today, his legacy is visible in every breaking news alert and live broadcast. As the World Cup 2026 in the US approaches, CNN's coverage will likely reach new audiences, continuing Turner's mission.

Turner is survived by his five children and his second wife, Jane Fonda, from whom he was divorced. His net worth, once estimated at $2 billion, was largely given away to charity. He once said, "I want to be remembered as someone who tried to make the world a better place." By that measure, he succeeded.
