Agricultural and health authorities in the United States and Mexico have escalated emergency protocols after a case of New World screwworm was confirmed in the Mexican state of Coahuila, less than 25 miles from the Texas border. The detection, announced jointly by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Mexican officials, has triggered a binational response to prevent the parasite from crossing into the United States.

Binational Efforts to Contain the Parasite

The infected animal, a young goat, was found in Coahuila, putting the region on high alert. The USDA has ramped up its biological control program, deploying up to 100 million sterile flies each week across northern Mexico and southern Texas. This technique, which disrupts the breeding cycle of the screwworm fly (Cochliomyia hominivorax), has been a cornerstone of eradication efforts since the 1960s, when the pest was eliminated from the continental United States.

Rear Admiral Michael Schmoyer, a USDA spokesperson, confirmed that all recent detections within a 100-mile radius of the border fall within the zone where sterile fly releases are already taking place. “We are maximizing our containment efforts to ensure the parasite does not re-establish itself in the U.S.,” he said.

Economic and Health Risks

The New World screwworm is a devastating pest that targets open wounds in warm-blooded animals, including livestock, pets, and even humans. Its larvae feed on living tissue, causing severe infections and often death if untreated. In Mexico, officials have reported over 26,000 livestock infestations and approximately 2,000 human cases, some fatal. Human transmission occurs when flies lay eggs in cuts or natural body cavities, leading to pain, foul odors, and visible larval movement under the skin.

If the parasite were to reach Texas, the economic impact could be catastrophic. Forecasts suggest a potential drain of up to $1.8 billion from the state’s economy, with rising beef prices nationwide due to cattle shortages. This threat comes as Texas AI adoption reshapes jobs and the state continues to attract corporate relocations, underscoring the need for robust agricultural protections.

Historical Context and Resurgence

The New World screwworm was successfully eradicated from the U.S. in the 1960s through decades of biological control and strict quarantines. However, the pest resurged in Central America in 2023, spreading northward through Costa Rica, Panama, and Mexico. This movement has forced U.S. authorities to reactivate high-level biosecurity measures to prevent a permanent return.

For ranchers and residents in border areas, the CDC and USDA have issued emergency guidelines: inspect livestock daily, isolate suspicious animals, and keep wounds clean and covered. Anyone traveling in rural areas should seek medical attention if symptoms like pain or unusual discharge appear after exposure to animals or open cuts.

The situation remains fluid, with binational teams maintaining active communication. While no cases have been found in the U.S., the proximity of the outbreak serves as a stark reminder of the interconnectedness of ecosystems and economies across the Americas.
