Meta has officially begun a major restructuring that will eliminate nearly 1,400 jobs in Washington State, signaling a strategic pivot toward artificial intelligence. The layoffs, notified through the WARN alert system, will take full effect by July 22, with affected employees receiving salary and benefits until then.

The cuts are part of a broader global reduction of 10% of Meta's workforce, which stood at around 78,000 employees at the end of the first quarter. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has made clear that the company is shifting its focus from expanding its technical staff to building the infrastructure needed to compete in the AI race.

Where the Cuts Hit Hardest

The Pacific Northwest, a region dense with tech talent, is bearing the brunt of this reorganization. The Bellevue headquarters will lose 699 positions, while Seattle offices will shed 259 jobs. Another 206 roles will be eliminated at the Redmond complex, and 231 remote workers across the state will also be let go.

These are not just administrative cuts. The layoffs target core technical roles, including software engineers, data scientists, content designers, and IT specialists. This reflects Meta's broader strategy to redirect human capital toward algorithmic design and AI development.

Zuckerberg's All-In Bet on AI

Zuckerberg has authorized billions of dollars for the acquisition of advanced chips and the construction of specialized data centers. The company is freezing vacancies and converting thousands of engineers to focus on AI projects.
