The legal battle over Ricky Martin's 2014 World Cup anthem "Vida" is far from over. A federal appeals court has breathed new life into a copyright infringement lawsuit that has dragged on for more than a decade, ordering both sides to enter a discovery phase that could finally determine whether the Puerto Rican superstar borrowed lyrics without permission.

The case, originally filed by Luis Adrián Cortés-Ramos in 2014, alleges that Martin's hit song — which appeared on the official soundtrack of the 2014 Brazil World Cup — is a direct copy of Cortés-Ramos's own composition, also titled "Vida." The track reached number five on Billboard's Hot Latin Songs chart and became a global anthem for the tournament, but the plaintiff has maintained that his work was used without credit or compensation.

A Long Legal Road

The lawsuit has seen multiple dismissals and appeals over the years. In 2020, a lower court threw out the case, but Cortés-Ramos appealed. Now, the First Circuit Court of Appeals has issued a 41-page ruling that vacates the earlier dismissal and sends the case back for further proceedings. Judge O. Rogeriee Thompson wrote that the lower courts acted too harshly by shutting down the case before Cortés-Ramos could conduct a proper discovery — a phase where both parties must present detailed evidence, including documents, communications, and expert testimony.

"The court deemed it fundamental to allow the plaintiff to gather evidence before making a final judgment," the ruling states. This procedural step is often critical in copyright cases, where the similarities between works and the chain of creation must be examined closely.

The dispute traces back to a contest organized by FIFA and Sony Music, which invited composers to submit songs for Ricky Martin to perform. Cortés-Ramos participated but did not win. He claims that the winning entry, "Vida," is essentially a copy of his own submission. The plaintiff has argued that the similarities are so striking that they constitute clear infringement, a position he has held unchanged for over a decade.

Neither Ricky Martin's legal team nor Cortés-Ramos's representatives have commented publicly on the new ruling. But the case is now set to move forward, and the music industry is watching closely. The outcome could set a precedent for how songwriting contests handle intellectual property claims, especially when a global superstar is involved.

For Latino audiences, this case touches on broader questions about creative ownership and the protection of artists' work across borders. The 2014 World Cup was a moment of pride for many in Latin America, with Brazil hosting and Martin, a Puerto Rican icon, performing the official song. But the legal shadow over "Vida" reminds us that behind the celebration, there are often unresolved disputes about who truly owns the art.

As the case returns to court, both sides will have to present their evidence in detail. For Cortés-Ramos, this is a chance to finally make his case after years of being shut out. For Martin, it's a reminder that even the biggest hits can come with legal baggage.
