Argentina's starting goalkeeper, Emiliano 'Dibu' Martínez, has put to rest any lingering doubts about his fitness for the 2026 World Cup. The Aston Villa shot-stopper, who suffered a minor fracture in the ring finger of his right hand during warm-ups before the Europa League final, confirmed directly to fans that he will be fully recovered in time for Argentina's opening match against Algeria on June 16.

Speaking to supporters as he stepped off the team bus in Kansas City on Tuesday, Martínez offered a simple but emphatic reassurance: “I will make it.” That message has brought a wave of relief to Lionel Scaloni’s camp, where the 33-year-old is considered an irreplaceable part of the squad’s defensive spine.

How the Injury Happened

The injury occurred under high-pressure circumstances. During the standard warm-up routine before the Europa League final, Martínez fractured the ring finger on his right hand. Despite the setback, he went on to play a key role in Aston Villa’s dominant 3-0 victory over Freiburg, securing the continental title. The keeper then capped off a stellar season by helping Villa finish fourth in the Premier League and earning a spot in the Europa League’s Team of the Season.

Now, with the World Cup just days away, the Argentine medical staff is managing his recovery carefully. Martínez has been training away from the main group in Kansas City, following a personalized rehabilitation program designed to ensure he is match-ready without risking further damage.

Scaloni has already named nine teams that could dethrone Argentina at the 2026 World Cup, but having his Golden Glove-winning goalkeeper available is a massive boost for the defending champions. Martínez’s presence between the posts was instrumental in Argentina’s 2022 World Cup triumph and their 2024 Copa América victory, and his leadership at the back remains a cornerstone of the team’s strategy.

Argentina will begin their title defense against Algeria in Kansas City on June 16. From there, Scaloni’s squad will travel to Arlington, Texas, for their remaining group-stage matches: against Austria on June 22 and Jordan on June 27. With Martínez locked in, the Albiceleste can focus on the task at hand: proving they can repeat as world champions.
