The second round of group stage matches at the 2026 World Cup has reshaped the tournament landscape. Under the expanded 48-team format, seven national teams have already secured their place in the Round of 32, while five others have seen their journeys end early.

Mexico, the United States, Germany, Argentina, France, Norway, and Colombia all advanced with two wins each. Meanwhile, Haiti, Turkey, Tunisia, Jordan, and Panama are mathematically eliminated heading into Matchday 3.

Latin American teams lead the charge

Mexico, co-host of the tournament, has been dominant in Group A with six points from two matches. El Tri sits atop the group ahead of South Korea (three points), while Czechia and South Africa each have one point. The Mexican squad has shown composure and attacking flair, setting up a strong run toward the knockout stages. For more on Mexico's potential path, check out our analysis on Mexico's 2026 World Cup Round of 32: Potential Third-Place Opponents from Groups C, E, F, H, and I.

Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, has cruised through Group J with six points, ahead of Austria and Algeria. La Albiceleste look every bit the defending champions, with a balanced squad that blends experience and youth. Colombia has also impressed, topping Group K with six points, ahead of Portugal's four. The Cafeteros have been solid at the back and clinical up front, meeting expectations as one of the tournament's dark horses.

Brazil, meanwhile, is not yet qualified but sits second in Group C with four points, tied with Morocco. Scotland trails with three points, while Haiti has been eliminated. The Seleção will need a result in their final group match to avoid the drama of the third-place scramble.

Groups wide open as final matchday approaches

Several groups remain fiercely contested. In Group B, Canada and Switzerland share the lead with four points each, while Bosnia and Qatar have one point each. No team has clinched or been eliminated yet, setting up a tense final round. Group F sees the Netherlands and Japan tied at four points, with Sweden close behind at three points.

Group G is led by Egypt with four points, but Iran, Belgium, and New Zealand are all still alive. Group H features Spain at four points, followed by Uruguay and Cape Verde with two points each, and Saudi Arabia with one point. The tight margins mean every goal could be decisive.

The United States has been one of the most convincing teams, topping Group D with six points and a +6 goal difference. Australia and Paraguay each have three points and will battle for second place, while Turkey has been eliminated. Germany leads Group E with six points and nine goals scored, the tournament's most lethal attack, followed by Ivory Coast with three points.

Third-place scramble adds intrigue

Under the new format, the top two teams from each group advance automatically, along with the eight best third-place finishers. This adds a layer of complexity, as teams with three or even two points could still sneak through. Groups I and J have already seen France and Norway advance together from Group I, while Argentina leads Group J. England and Ghana are tied at four points in Group L, with Croatia on three points and desperate for a win in their final match.

As Matchday 3 approaches, the drama is building. Latin American fans have plenty to cheer for, with Mexico, Argentina, and Colombia already through, and Brazil, Uruguay, and Paraguay still in the hunt. The expanded tournament has delivered more matches, more storylines, and more opportunities for the region's teams to shine.
