Selena Gomez continues to defy expectations. The Texas-born actress and singer, who rose to fame on Disney Channel, is now attached to one of the most anticipated and secretive auteur projects in recent memory. Directed by Brady Corbet, the film tentatively titled The Origin of the World will feature Gomez alongside Oscar winner Cate Blanchett and acclaimed actor Michael Fassbender.

The project first surfaced when Blanchett, during a masterclass at the Cannes Film Festival, inadvertently let slip that she was working with Corbet. Since then, details have trickled out through industry trades like Variety and The Hollywood Reporter, painting a picture of an ambitious, sprawling narrative that begins in the 19th century and ends in the present day, with a particular focus on the aesthetics and social movements of the 1970s.

From Disney to Auteur Cinema

For those who have followed Gomez from her days on Wizards of Waverly Place to her recent Emmy-nominated turn in Only Murders in the Building, this role marks a significant evolution. She earned critical acclaim for her performance in Jacques Audiard's Emilia Pérez, and now she is diving into the deep end of arthouse filmmaking. Corbet, known for his visually ambitious works like The Brutalist and Vox Lux, is a filmmaker who pushes boundaries. At 37, he has already earned a reputation at European festivals for his grand-scale storytelling.

The script for The Origin of the World is reportedly 200 pages long, an unusual length that reflects its epic scope. To capture the distinct eras, the technical team plans to use large-format cameras rarely seen in commercial cinema today. Corbet has described the film as an adult movie, not in the exploitative sense, but as a warning about its mature themes and raw, transgressive nature.

This casting brings together three very different energies: Gomez's pop-star charisma and dramatic growth, Blanchett's refined elegance, and Fassbender's intense psychological depth. It's a combination that promises a dynamic rarely seen in contemporary productions.

For the Latino audience, Gomez's journey is particularly resonant. She has consistently embraced her Mexican heritage, from her Rare Beauty campaign celebrating Latinidad to her recent sightings filming in Los Angeles's Latino neighborhoods with Becky G. This new role, while a departure from her previous work, continues her pattern of choosing projects that challenge her and reflect a broader artistic ambition.

Production is expected to begin later this year, with a potential release in 2026. As the film industry watches closely, one thing is clear: Selena Gomez is not afraid to take risks, and The Origin of the World might just be her most daring move yet.
