Jacob Elordi, the Australian actor known for his role in Euphoria, will not serve on the jury for the 79th edition of the Cannes Film Festival after fracturing a bone in his foot. The injury, which occurred just days before the festival’s start on May 12, makes it impossible for him to navigate the demanding schedule of premieres, press conferences, and red-carpet events along La Croisette.

Organizers are now scrambling to find a replacement to join the jury, which is presided over by acclaimed South Korean director Park Chan-wook. The panel already includes a stellar lineup: Demi Moore, Chloé Zhao, Stellan Skarsgård, and Chilean filmmaker Diego Céspedes, whose presence is a point of pride for Latin American cinema fans. The jury will evaluate works from directors like Pedro Almodóvar and Asghar Farhadi, competing for the Palme d’Or.

Elordi’s Injury History and Rising Career

This is not the first time Elordi has faced a physical setback. During the filming of Wuthering Heights, he suffered a second-degree burn on his back from a steam shower accident that required hospitalization. Earlier, as a rugby player in school, he fractured his back and spent a year recovering. Despite these challenges, his career has soared: he earned an Oscar nomination this year and is set to appear in the third season of Euphoria. His next major film role is in Ridley Scott’s sci-fi project The Dog Stars.

While Elordi recovers at home, the media continues to follow his personal life, especially after rumors linked him with Kendall Jenner. Many had hoped to see the couple together on the Cannes red carpet, but those plans are now on hold. The Cannes Film Festival remains a key event for Latino cinephiles, especially with Diego Céspedes on the jury. His participation highlights the growing presence of Latin American voices in global cinema. For those following the festival, the absence of Elordi is a disappointment, but the jury’s depth ensures a rigorous competition.

As the festival runs from May 12 to 23, the search for a replacement continues. Meanwhile, Elordi’s fans can look forward to his upcoming projects, including The Dog Stars and the new season of Euphoria.
