What started as a routine Facebook Marketplace transaction in Doral, Florida, turned into a nightmare on October 9 when a man was ambushed and held at gunpoint. The victim, who had previously bought a phone from the seller, agreed to meet again to purchase additional devices. But when he opened the passenger door of the seller's vehicle, he found a second man in the back seat pointing a handgun at him.

The suspects forced the victim into the car and drove through the streets of Doral, robbing him of his belongings. At one point, near Northwest 87th Avenue and Northwest 58th Street, the victim tried to jump out, but the gunman pulled him back. It was then that he came up with a clever escape: he grabbed his bag of cash and threw it out the window. The distraction gave him just enough time to leap from the moving vehicle and get to safety.

How the suspects were caught

Doral Police Chief Matthew Castillo credited quick detective work for the arrests. The first suspect was taken into custody in Miami-Dade County, while the second was captured in Broward County with help from the Broward Sheriff's Office. Both men now face charges of armed kidnapping, robbery, and conspiracy, and are being held without bond.

Investigators gathered evidence from witness statements, traffic cameras, and the cash recovered at the scene. The case is being prosecuted in the Eleventh Judicial Circuit of Florida, where the suspects could face lengthy prison sentences given the violent nature of the crime.

Safety tips for online marketplace deals

Chief Castillo emphasized the importance of meeting in safe, monitored locations. He recommends using police station lobbies for any peer-to-peer exchange. This incident is a stark reminder that online marketplaces can attract criminals. Similar cases have been reported elsewhere, such as a fake check deal in Washington that also ended in kidnapping.

For the Latino community in South Florida, where platforms like Facebook Marketplace are widely used, this story hits close to home. It underscores the need for caution and awareness when dealing with strangers online. Always trust your instincts, and if a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is.

As the investigation continues, authorities hope this case serves as a warning. The victim's quick thinking likely saved his life, but not everyone is so lucky. Stay safe, and remember: your safety is worth more than any deal.
