The UEFA Champions League has always been the stage where the game's finest finishers build their legends. For over two decades, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have defined that stage, and their names still sit at the very top of the all-time scoring charts. But the list behind them is shifting, with a new generation—led by Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland—rewriting the record books at a pace we haven't seen before.

Here's the complete ranking of the competition's top scorers, from the Portuguese icon's record 141 goals to the Egyptian King's 54, and everyone in between.

The top three: Ronaldo, Messi, and Lewandowski

Cristiano Ronaldo (141 goals) stands alone at the summit. His tally spans Sporting CP, Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Juventus, with the bulk coming during his nine years in Madrid. He's the only player to score in three separate Champions League finals, and his 17 goals in a single season (2013–14) remains a record. Even as he's moved on from Europe's top club competition, his mark feels untouchable for now.

Lionel Messi (129 goals) is right behind him, with 120 for Barcelona and nine for Paris Saint-Germain. The Argentine's eight Ballon d'Ors and four Champions League titles speak to his brilliance, but his scoring consistency in Europe—especially during that peak Pep Guardiola era—is what cements his place here. His 91 goals in 2012 across all competitions included a Champions League haul that still feels surreal.

Robert Lewandowski (109 goals) is the only active player still inside the top three. The Polish striker, now at Barcelona, scored 69 for Borussia Dortmund and 40 for Bayern Munich before adding to his tally in Catalonia. He's also the fastest to reach 100 goals in the competition, doing it in just 111 appearances. At 36, he's still adding to his total, though the gap to Messi and Ronaldo may be too large to close.

The next tier: Benzema, Mbappé, and the rest

Karim Benzema (90 goals) sits fourth, a testament to his longevity and big-game pedigree. The Frenchman scored 86 for Real Madrid and four for Lyon, and his 2021–22 run—when he carried Madrid to the title with 15 goals—was one of the greatest individual Champions League campaigns ever. He's now plying his trade in Saudi Arabia, but his European legacy is secure.

Kylian Mbappé (71 goals) is the youngest player in the top ten, and he's already matched Raúl González's total. The French forward reached 60 goals in just 89 matches, the third-fastest in history, and he's now at Real Madrid, where he'll have every chance to chase down the legends ahead of him. His pace and finishing make him the most likely candidate to eventually challenge the top two, though he'll need to stay healthy and consistent for another decade.

Raúl González (71 goals) was the record holder before Messi and Ronaldo came along. The Spanish striker scored 66 for Real Madrid and five for Schalke 04, and his 2000 final winner against Valencia remains iconic. He's now a coach, but his name still resonates in the Champions League record books.

Ruud van Nistelrooy (60 goals) was the ultimate penalty-box predator. The Dutchman scored 56 for Manchester United and four for Real Madrid, and he was the competition's top scorer in three separate seasons. His 2001–02 campaign, when he netted 10 goals in the group stage alone, set a standard that stood for years.

Erling Haaland (59 goals) has reached his total in just 48 matches—the fastest of anyone in the top ten. The Norwegian won the Champions League with Manchester City in 2023, scoring 12 goals in that run, and he's already won the European Golden Shoe twice. At 25, he's on pace to shatter records if he stays fit and stays at a top club.

Andriy Shevchenko (59 goals) remains Ukraine's greatest export to European football. The former Ballon d'Or winner scored 59 goals for Dynamo Kyiv, AC Milan, and Chelsea, and his winning penalty in the 2003 final against Juventus gave Milan their sixth European Cup. His 2005 final performance, even in defeat, is still remembered as one of the best individual displays in a final.

Thomas Müller (57 goals) and Harry Kane (57 goals) are tied on the same number. Müller, a Bayern Munich lifer, has won the competition twice and holds the record for most appearances for a single club (151). Kane, now at Bayern after a prolific spell at Tottenham, is still chasing his first major trophy, but his scoring rate in Europe has been relentless—he's averaged nearly a goal per game in the Champions League.

Mohamed Salah (54 goals) rounds out the top ten. The Egyptian has scored 46 of his goals for Liverpool, including the opener in the 2019 final against Tottenham. He's been a consistent presence in Europe's elite competition, and at 32, he's still going strong.

The future of the list

What makes this ranking so compelling is how it's evolving. While Ronaldo and Messi remain the benchmarks, the next generation is closing in. Mbappé and Haaland are both under 27, and they're scoring at a rate that suggests they could eventually challenge the top two. Lewandowski, meanwhile, is still active, and his 109 goals could grow if Barcelona keep qualifying for the knockout rounds.

For fans across Latin America, this list carries extra weight. Messi's legacy is a source of pride for Argentina and the entire Spanish-speaking football world, and his rivalry with Ronaldo—who has his own following in places like Brazil and Mexico—has defined an era. The divergent farewells of these two icons have been a topic of discussion, but their scoring records will outlast them both.

As the Champions League continues to grow, so will this list. New stars will emerge, and some may even threaten the records that once seemed untouchable. But for now, the names at the top—Ronaldo, Messi, Lewandowski—remain the gold standard, and the chase is far from over.
