Panini, the Italian publisher behind the beloved World Cup sticker albums, has sparked a major controversy among collectors and Brazilian fans. For the first time in four tournaments, the 2026 edition—featuring 980 stickers—does not include Neymar, Brazil's all-time leading scorer. The omission comes despite his inclusion in Carlo Ancelotti's final 26-man roster for this summer's tournament in North America.

How the Algorithm Missed the Mark

Production for the album began last year at Panini's headquarters in Modena, Italy. A specialized team uses mathematical probability models to predict which players will make their national teams. According to Panini's Brazil CEO, Raúl Vallecillo, Neymar did not meet their criteria because he hadn't played for the Seleção since tearing his ACL in October 2023. His lengthy absence dropped his statistical probabilities—right before Ancelotti surprised everyone with his call-up.

The irony is hard to miss. The album includes young stars like Rodrygo, Estêvão, and João Pedro, all of whom will not play in the World Cup due to severe late-season injuries. So Panini has printed stickers of three forwards who are out of the tournament while completely missing Brazil's most marketable icon.

The Collector's Market Shake-Up

This isn't the first time Panini has had to correct an album mid-cycle. During the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the publisher released a retroactive update set of 70 to 80 stickers to include players like Eduardo Camavinga, João Félix, and Paulo Dybala. A similar move is expected for 2026. These late-release correction stickers often become highly sought-after collectibles due to limited print runs, while the mistakenly included injured players can also gain rarity value.

For fans, the wait for Neymar's sticker is frustrating but not surprising. The Santos forward has always defied expectations. His return to the national team after a devastating injury is a testament to his resilience. As he works to prove his fitness to Ancelotti—likely as a spark plug off the bench—he's also taking a poetic competitive revenge against the algorithms that counted him out too soon.

The Neymar snub is a reminder that even in the age of big data, football remains gloriously unpredictable. For Brazilian fans, the real prize isn't a rare sticker—it's seeing their number 10 on the pitch this summer.
