Houston's comeback pedigree stands out
Among the winless group, the Texans have the most reason for hope. Head coach DeMeco Ryans and quarterback CJ Stroud have been through this before, and they have the locker room culture to stay calm. The defense is loaded with playmakers, and the memory of that turnaround is fresh. If any team can defy the odds again, it's Houston.
But the other four clubs face different challenges. The Titans and Dolphins came into the season in rebuilding mode, so their slow starts are less surprising. The Chargers, however, were supposed to be contenders. They've been undone by costly mistakes and now face a brutal schedule. The Buccaneers are dealing with internal turmoil, and quarterback Baker Mayfield is expected to miss several weeks with a thumb injury. That's a tough blow for a team that already looked shaky.
For Latino fans across the league, there's a cultural connection to some of these teams. The Chargers have a strong following in Southern California's Latino community, and the Texans have embraced the city's diverse fan base. But the on-field product has been disappointing. As the season progresses, these teams will need to find answers quickly.
The math is simple: to make the playoffs, teams usually need 10 or 11 wins. Starting 0-3 leaves almost no margin for error. Every game from here on out is essentially a must-win. The Texans have shown they can do it, but the others are running out of time. Unless the Chargers fix their execution issues or the Buccaneers rally without Mayfield, the 2026 postseason likely won't include any of these five teams.
For now, fans in those cities are left hoping for a miracle. History says it's unlikely, but football has a way of surprising us. The Texans proved that last year. Maybe another team can follow their lead.
