Before LeBron James packed his bags for Los Angeles in 2018, his financial team was already working on a move that had nothing to do with basketball. A corporate entity controlled by the four-time NBA champion quietly secured nearly $300 million in loans by issuing bonds backed by his off-court endorsement deals, including his lifetime contract with Nike.

The transactions, which took place months before James left the Cleveland Cavaliers for the Lakers, were funded by two life insurance companies under Sammons Financial Group, advised by an affiliate of Guggenheim Partners. The bonds carried a 4.8% coupon rate and are set to mature in 2049, according to insurance industry filings reviewed by Bloomberg.

This wasn't a loan against his NBA salary. Instead, it securitized James's future earnings from endorsements and business ventures—a strategy more common among celebrities and high-net-worth individuals looking to unlock cash without selling assets or taking on traditional debt.

Financial ties and regulatory oversight

The disclosure places James's financial structure within a web that includes Guggenheim, an investment management firm currently under federal scrutiny. The Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission are investigating Guggenheim over more than $20 billion in loans to affiliated entities that were allegedly improperly reported. No formal charges have been filed, and officials have stated no wrongdoing on the part of James or his team.

Guggenheim is led by Mark Walter, who also owns a stake in the Lakers. Walter recently agreed to sell that stake to investors Josh Kushner and Bob Iger at a valuation of $12.5 billion, a deal that underscores the financial firepower surrounding the league.

For James, the borrowing strategy is part of a broader approach to managing his wealth, which Forbes officially recognized as billionaire status in 2022. His business portfolio includes SpringHill Co., the entertainment and media company he co-founded with Maverick Carter, which received a capital injection from Guggenheim in 2020.

Supplemental transactions and official response

By the end of last year, the participating insurers held approximately $245 million in bonds tied to James, following structured repayments and secondary issuances. A separate arrangement in 2022 provided an additional $60 million, coinciding with James signing a two-year, $97 million contract extension with the Lakers.

A spokesperson for James described the financial structure as a standard wealth management procedure, emphasizing that securitizing personal non-NBA assets is a customary strategy for high-net-worth individuals. The spokesperson also confirmed that the 2022 deal received third-party credit ratings and full authorization from the NBA.

While the financial details are complex, the takeaway is clear: LeBron James is not just an athlete but a financial operator who leverages his brand in ways that go far beyond the court. For Latino fans who follow his career—whether in Los Angeles, Miami, or across the diaspora—this story offers a glimpse into the business side of sports, where endorsements and investments can be as strategic as a game-winning shot.

As James continues to build his empire, his moves off the court are likely to remain as closely watched as his performance on it. And with the Lakers' recent roster changes and his own contract status, the financial maneuvering is far from over.
