Joe Manganiello is pulling back the curtain on the private battles he faced during his marriage to Colombian superstar Sofía Vergara. In his upcoming memoir, Bloodlines, the actor reveals that for seven years he fought a rare autoimmune disease that nearly killed him—and that Vergara, he says, was not the supportive partner he needed.

According to Manganiello, the symptoms began shortly after their 2015 wedding. He describes intense abdominal pain and rapid weight loss that led to multiple surgeries. During those harrowing moments, he claims Vergara refused to offer even a simple hug or a sign of affection. “I needed her, and she wasn’t there,” he writes, recounting the emotional isolation he felt while battling for his health.

A marriage under strain

The couple’s divorce in 2023 was initially attributed to differences in age and Vergara’s reluctance to have more children. But Manganiello now offers a different perspective. He says that after several failed in vitro fertilization attempts and invasive treatments, his own deteriorating health made him abandon the idea of fatherhood. He feared leaving Vergara to raise a child alone if he didn’t survive.

In the memoir, Manganiello also opens up about periods of deep despair and dark thoughts. He credits his small rescue dog, a chihuahua, with being his emotional anchor during the bleakest moments. “That little dog was my reason to get up in the morning,” he writes.

These revelations add a new layer to the public narrative of their split, which had already captured headlines across the entertainment world. For many in the Latino community, Vergara is a beloved figure, and Manganiello’s account challenges the rosy image of their marriage that was often presented in the press.

Moving forward

Now, after a successful surgery and a period of spiritual healing, Manganiello says he is in a much better place. He is currently dating Caitlin O’Connor and, for the first time in years, is thinking about fatherhood again. “I’m not the same person I was,” he says. “I’ve been given a second chance.”

The memoir is set to shake up Hollywood’s understanding of one of its most high-profile couples. It also serves as a reminder that behind the glamour of red carpets and magazine covers, there are often painful, unseen struggles.

For fans of Vergara, this story may be difficult to reconcile with the vibrant, confident persona she projects. But Manganiello’s account is his truth, and it adds a complex chapter to the ongoing conversation about celebrity marriages and the toll of illness.

As the book hits shelves, readers will get a closer look at the man behind the Magic Mike persona—and the battles he fought away from the spotlight.
