Javier Mascherano, the Argentine coach who led Inter Miami to its first MLS Cup before stepping down earlier this year, has sparked fresh speculation about his next move. During a recent trip to Mexico City for a promotional event tied to El Clásico, Mascherano made it clear that coaching in Liga MX is very much on the table.

Speaking to reporters, the former Barcelona and Argentina captain didn't hold back his admiration for Mexican football. "Why not?" he said when asked about a potential role in the league. "It's an entertaining, high-level championship that demands constant preparation." Mascherano noted that he follows the Liguilla closely, particularly the performances of clubs like Toluca, and appreciates the intensity and quality of the competition.

Argentine Influence in Mexican Football

Mascherano pointed to the strong presence of Argentine coaches in Liga MX as a natural draw. From Ricardo Ferretti's legendary tenure at Pumas to the current crop of managers, the pipeline between Argentina and Mexico's top flight is well established. "It's no coincidence that so many of my compatriots have succeeded here," he said. "The league's format and the passion of the fans make it a unique challenge."

His comments come as the Liga MX semifinals heat up, with Pumas, Pachuca, Chivas, and Cruz Azul battling for a spot in the final. Mascherano mentioned he's been watching those matches closely, studying the tactical approaches of each side.

For now, Mascherano says he's enjoying time off with his family after a whirlwind stint in Miami. But he left the door wide open: "I'm open to listening to proposals. Mexico is a place where I could see myself working."

Beyond his own future, Mascherano weighed in on Lionel Messi's form ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Having coached Messi at Inter Miami and played alongside him for Argentina, he offered a simple assessment: "He always looks in excellent condition. I have no doubts about his ability to perform at the highest level."

He also drew comparisons between Barcelona's current crop of academy talent and the golden generation he was part of 15 years ago, which included players like Busquets, Alba, and Suárez. "The success of these youngsters not only benefits the club but directly strengthens the Spanish national team," he said.

Meanwhile, his former club Inter Miami announced a multi-year partnership with Prenetics Global Limited, the parent company of IM8, a health brand co-founded by David Beckham. The deal gives Inter Miami an equity stake in IM8, making it the club's exclusive health supplement provider. Beckham emphasized that the partnership aims to optimize player performance through scientific innovation, further solidifying the club's infrastructure.

As Mascherano weighs his options, Liga MX fans will be watching closely. With his pedigree and openness to the league, a move to Mexico could be the next chapter for El Jefecito.
