The entertainment world is mourning the loss of Hayden Panettiere, the actress who captured hearts as Claire Bennet in Heroes and as Juliette Barnes in Nashville. She was found unresponsive in Greenville, South Carolina, on Sunday afternoon and pronounced dead at the scene. She was 36.

As of Monday morning, the official cause and manner of death have not been released. Her publicist, Kasey Kitchen, confirmed that an investigation is underway and indicated that more details could emerge soon. The Greenville Police Department responded to a call around 1:50 p.m. Sunday after an acquaintance of the actress placed a 911 call. Emergency personnel administered medical assistance, but Panettiere could not be revived.

What police have said so far

The Greenville Police Department stated that its preliminary investigation found no indication of foul play or suspicious circumstances. The case is now being handled jointly by the police and the Greenville County Coroner’s Office. While investigators have not uncovered anything suspicious, they have not yet determined—or at least publicly disclosed—what led to her death.

This distinction matters. The absence of foul play does not mean the cause is known. Until the coroner releases its findings, the question remains open.

Her past struggles do not explain her death

Panettiere had been open about her battles with postpartum depression and addiction. Earlier this year, she spoke about how anxiety and panic attacks during a difficult period in her life contributed to her turning to substances. However, authorities have not linked those past struggles to her death. Connecting her history of addiction or mental health challenges to her passing would be pure speculation at this point.

She also endured the sudden loss of her younger brother, actor Jansen Panettiere, in 2023. He died at 28 from an enlarged heart caused by an undiagnosed heart condition. She later described his death as an experience that “rocks your world.”

When might we know more?

Panettiere’s publicist said Sunday that the investigation was ongoing and suggested that more information could be available as early as Monday. The Greenville County Coroner’s Office will play a central role in establishing the official cause and manner of death. Until those findings are released, the cause remains officially unknown.

Her father, Skip Panettiere, confirmed her death Sunday night, describing his daughter as “an incredible light and a force of nature” who brought joy to her family and to the millions who watched her onscreen.

As the investigation continues, fans across the Americas and beyond are remembering her talent and the roles that made her a household name. Her work in Heroes and Nashville left a lasting mark on television, and her openness about personal struggles resonated with many.

For now, the focus is on supporting her family and awaiting the coroner’s findings. The entertainment community has already begun to pay tribute, and her legacy as an actress and advocate will endure.
