Two of Mexico's most talked-about young footballers, Gilberto Mora and Armando “Hormiga” González, are at very different financial stages in their careers. While both have captured the imagination of fans across the country, their reported salaries tell a story of contrasting trajectories—one already cashing in on senior-level success, the other still riding the wave of teenage promise.

The current salary gap

As of now, Hormiga González holds the higher reported paycheck. The 23-year-old striker, who broke out with Chivas, is said to earn around $1.2 million per season—roughly 21 million Mexican pesos—according to a March report from TV Azteca. That figure already places him well above most of his Mexican peers, and it could climb even higher if his move to Greek side Olympiacos goes through.

Reports in Mexico suggest González's potential salary in Greece would land near $2 million annually, a jump of about 67% from his Chivas earnings. However, Olympiacos has not publicly confirmed those numbers, so they remain estimates. The transfer itself has hit some snags, with Chivas reportedly holding firm on their asking price, as recent updates indicate.

Mora's new deal changes the picture

Gilberto Mora's situation is more complex. Earlier estimates placed his Xolos de Tijuana salary at about 200,000 pesos per month, or 2.4 million pesos a year. But those figures came from his previous contract. In June 2026, Tijuana announced a new three-year agreement with the 17-year-old, calling it the most important contract in club history for a player—without disclosing the financial terms.

That means the often-cited comparison that González earns nearly nine times more than Mora is now outdated. It was accurate only when measured against Mora's old deal. With Mora's current salary undisclosed, any precise gap is impossible to calculate responsibly.

Mora's future remains a hot topic, with European clubs circling. PSG's patient approach and Liverpool links backed by Borgetti suggest his market value could soar, but that doesn't automatically translate into a bigger paycheck today.

Salary vs. market value

The contrast between the two players highlights how clubs pay for proven production versus potential. González, at 23, is entering his prime and moving to European football, where wages are typically higher. Mora, still a teenager, may command enormous transfer interest and a potentially higher market valuation, but his current earnings reflect his age and experience level.

For now, Hormiga González appears to have the higher publicly reported salary, especially if the Olympiacos figure proves accurate. But Mora's new Xolos contract changed the equation significantly. Until its financial details are disclosed, any exact salary comparison should be treated as an estimate rather than fact.

Both players represent the bright future of Mexican football, but their financial paths remind us that hype and hard cash don't always move at the same speed.
