The HBO series Euphoria has closed its third and final season with a devastating conclusion: Rue Bennett, played by Zendaya, dies after taking pills laced with fentanyl. The episode, which aired on May 31, 2026, brings to a close a show that since 2019 has explored the raw edges of teenage life, substance abuse, and grief without sugarcoating.

While the finale also featured the collapse of Laurie's drug network after a DEA raid, the emotional weight falls squarely on Rue's fate. Her long battle with addiction reaches a point of no return, leaving viewers shaken.

Why Sam Levinson Chose This Ending

Creator Sam Levinson has faced mixed reactions to the decision, but he stands by it. In interviews, he explained that telling an honest, unvarnished story about grief and chemical dependency was essential. “The honest ending is that people like Rue don’t make it,” he said. For Levinson, this was not a random plot twist but a reflection of reality.

The finale also carries a personal weight for the production team. They drew inspiration from the loss of actor Angus Cloud, who died accidentally in 2023. Cloud played Fezco, a character who also struggled with addiction. The show sought to honor those who, as Levinson put it, “did not receive a second chance.”

What Happens to the Other Characters

Rue's death is not the only tragedy. Nate Jacobs dies from a rattlesnake bite in the previous episode, leaving Cassie and Maddy deeply scarred. Both characters try to process this dark event while remaining trapped in their own survival dynamics. Jules, Rue's great love, finds a way to channel her pain through art.

Ali, Rue's sponsor and a father figure, takes justice into his own hands in a final confrontation. His arc closes with an emotional act of remembrance around a family table, symbolizing the peace Rue could never reach in life.

The series has also faced backlash from real OnlyFans creators over Cassie's storyline, and some viewers have criticized the show's handling of certain themes. But for many, the finale felt like a fitting, if painful, end.

Online reactions have been divided. Some praise the show for its unflinching look at addiction, while others feel disappointed. Regardless, Euphoria has left a mark on television, and fans are already wondering which new production will capture similar raw energy.
