Manchester United have made their first big move of the summer, landing Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos from Chelsea in a deal worth £50 million. The transfer, which includes £48 million guaranteed and £2 million in add-ons, signals the start of a midfield rebuild under new manager Michael Carrick.

Santos, 22, emerged as one of the Premier League's most promising young midfielders during the 2025-26 season, making 43 appearances for Chelsea across all competitions. His three goals and four assists don't tell the full story: the Brazilian brings defensive intensity, technical quality, and the ability to drive play forward from deep positions.

Why United Made Santos a Priority

Club officials had Santos on their radar long before the transfer window opened. They see him as the ideal fit for Carrick's system—a midfielder who can win the ball back and then quickly transition into attack. Santos has shown versatility too, playing as a defensive midfielder, box-to-box, or even in a more advanced role when needed.

United's recruitment team also values his leadership and personality, believing he'll integrate smoothly into the dressing room. For a club that has struggled with squad cohesion in recent years, that matters.

Santos himself made it clear that Carrick was a major factor in his decision. "As a midfielder, I am really excited to have the opportunity to learn from Michael Carrick. He is the perfect coach to help me take the next step in my career," Santos said after completing the move.

Why Chelsea Let Him Go

Chelsea's decision to sell surprised some fans, especially after Santos established himself in the first team. But the Blues' midfield picture got crowded after Moisés Caicedo signed a contract extension through 2033, and with no European football this season, game time would have been limited. Rather than stunt his development, Chelsea accepted a strong offer while negotiating a 10 percent sell-on clause—a sign they still believe in his potential.

United's midfield needs are clear. Casemiro has left, and Uruguayan Manuel Ugarte is sidelined with a serious knee injury. The club is in advanced talks to sign Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa, and other names like Alex Scott, Sander Berge, Ayyoub Bouaddi, and Felix Nmecha remain on the shortlist. United also continue to admire Ederson, though Santos was never seen as his replacement.

Carrick's message is unmistakable: rebuilding the midfield is the top priority, and Santos is just the first piece of what could be one of the busiest transfer windows in years at Old Trafford.

For Brazilian fans, Santos' move to United is another chapter in the long history of Brazilian talent in the Premier League. And with Carrick—a former midfielder himself—guiding him, the potential is huge. This is a signing that could define United's midfield for years to come.
